DEMONSTRATE IN SUPPORT OF
BRAZILIAN INDIGENOUS PEOPLES!!!
PROTEST THE YANOMAMI MASSACRE!!!
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1993
12:00 to 2:00 P.M.
EMBASSY OF BRAZIL -- 3006 MASS. AVE. N.W.
On Thursdsay, September 16, hundreds of indigenous leaders from all parts
of Brazil will meet in Brasilia to demand that the government honor its
constitutional obligation to demarcate all Indian lands by October 5. The
massacre of 18 Yanomami men, women and children in July 1993 tragically
demonstrates the urgent need for the protection of Indian lands throughout
Brazil. On August 25, Yanomami leader Davi Kopenawa Yanomami called
for an international campaign to protest the massacre and urge the removal
of all miners from the area.
Environmental and human rights organizations around the world will be
demonstrating in solidarity with the indigenous leaders in Brasilia. Events
are planned in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, Ottowa,
Rome, New York, and Tokyo.
Previous demonstrations (on September 7) were well covered by Brazilian
press and television. Internationally coordinated demonstrations in support
of the indigenous leaders in Brazil will send a clear message to Brazilian
policy makers that the Yanomami massacre will not be forgotten and that
the demarcation of all Indian lands is of global concern.
