Years ago, I had spoken with several people who were very much
involved with trying to promote awareness of conditions there. Two
Mohawk chiefs, Jake Swamp and Tom Porter, would be good sources of
information. The Quakers were also very involved. You could try contacting
Rick Mitchell or Steven Penningroth, both of whom are professors at Rutgers
University in New Jersey.
The school that the Mohawks formed, the "Akwesasne Freedom School",
had to be moved due to the tremendous pollution that existed on that part
of the reservation, from which the children were getting sick.
