*NEWS FROM CANADA* - Tuesday, September 21, 1993

Ovide Mercredi, national chief of the Assembly of First
Nations, will not support any party or candidate in the federal
election, and has called on the media to press for a debate on
native issues. He said the Liberal and NDP platforms on native
issues have no specifics, and that the Conservatives have no
platform. Status Indians are divided over whether to vote in
elections or not.
