An important article about the Huaoroni in Ecuadorian Amazon
appears in this week's NEW YORKER magazine (September 27, 1993):

"Letter from the Amazon: WITH SPEARS FROM ALL SIDES," by Joe
Kane

The capsule summary of the article is as follows:

"The Huaroani are an ancient tribe whose survival is threatened
by American oil development in the Ecuadorian Amazon. They
endured missionary zeal, corporate encroachment, and American
environmentalist campaigns claiming to represent their
interests. Then the Huaoroni tried to save themselves."

I strongly recommend you read this article. It is too long for
posting here, though I may scan it for inclusion in the archives
if Gary or others so desire.
