NATIVE MUSIC, SINGERS AND SPEAKERS TO HIGHLIGHT
NEW YORK VIGIL FOR THREATENED AMAZON PEOPLE

Sept. 30, 1993 New York,NY ... A vigil in support of the Yanomami
Indians of Brazil will feature performances by musicians and singers
from several Western hemisphere native nations.

The vigil will feature Brazilians and Native Americans in dance,
theater and music performances, as well as presentations by Amazon
Leaders. Speakers will include two native leaders from the Amazon,
Sia Kaxinawa and Biraci Yawanawa, along with Zeze Weiss, director of
Amanaka'a, who will explain the latest developments following the
August massacre of Yanomami Indians. Horst Rechelbacher, chief
executive officer of AVEDA Aromaology Corporation, will make a
statement in support of the Yanomami Indians and Bianca Jagger, human
rights advocate, will speak on behalf of the international community.
Recording artist Eliana Elias, of Blue Note/EMI Classics records,
plus the Arawak Mountain Singers and Brazilian singer Maucha Adnet
will perform. Other performers include Muyuy Cultural Center
performance of dance and theater, and musical groups Silver Clouds,
Robby Romero, Los Incas, and the Mandala Drummers featuring Jeff
Barnes.

The event is organized by Amanaka'a, a non-profit organization
dedicated exclusively to supporting the peoples of the Amazon
Rainforest, with the support of Native American organizations
including The 500 Years of Resistance Committee, The League of
Indigenous Sovereign Nations, the Muyuy Cultural Center, and others.
Partial funding was provided by the AVEDA Aromaology Corp. The
performances are open to the public at no charge.
