In reply to the person seeking information on Native American Boarding
Schools there is a book by Basil H. Johnston called Indian School Days
published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 1989. It was good but
I don't believe a book could ever relay just how horrible an experience this
was for the children. Mr. Johnston I believe is Ojibwa and the school was
Spanish. My own grandfather was put in school at Bacone College in Oklahoma
and his sister at the women's seminary in Talequah. My great aunt told
me my grandfather was punished a lot for refusing to speak English. After
school he went directly to the Navy and WWI. He passed on last summer and
is greatly missed.
