SARAWAK ALERT - ARREST OF PENANS

Eleven Penan men were arrested on 29 September 1993 at the
protest site at Ulu Sungei Sebatu, Ulu Baram.

They are presently remanded at the Police station in Marudi. They
are to be detained until 13 October (14 days), when they will be
brought to court to be formally charged.

These eleven persons are part of the group of Penans who have
been protesting against logging operation within their
traditional territory in the Ulu Selaam and Ulu Sebatu, Baram.
Their area is said to be within the concession of the company,
Kelesa.

This is information which SAM has obtained after a telephone call
to the police station in Marudi.
