... and Alaska
Bill Staines, well known Folk Singer from the far Northeast (like New Hampshire)
was just in San Francisco last Sunday night, and informed me that he will be
stopping in Oregon on his way to Alaska (where he does an annual tour). He
isn't Native American BUT many of us love his stuff .... those great songs
many of us can identify with, like "The Black Fly Song" ... written while
working on a survey crew on the Little Labitibby (?) River in Canada, "Hauling
in the Wood", "Spirit Song", and a country-wide favorite "All Gods Critters
Got a Place in the Choir; and the Porcupine talks to himself". Bill is a
truly unique musician, playing this guitar left handed (by turning it around;
i.e., upside down), as opposed to restringing it .... which is to say that
his base strings are on the bottom (as you look down on it) rather than at
the top. The good news on this is that if you are watching him play, it is
much easier to figure out what chords he is playing because you are "seeing
him" the same way it would look if you were to look down at your guitar's
neck if you were playing yourself.... sorry for the "technical lingo" for
you non-guitar players. He also has a new CD/tape out of favorite Kids Songs
for those of you who like to entertain kids (or relive your own musical
childhood. Here is the info on his two Oregon concerts:
TONIGHT, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14:
CORVALIS, OREGON at the "Big Theater" located in the "Down Town" area.
7:30 or 8 (sorry he was so vague)
FRIDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 15:
PORTLAND, OREGON, EAST AVENUE TAVERN ON BURNSIDE
ALASKA APPEARANCES UNKNOWN, **BUT** I'M SURE IT WILL BE EASY TO FIND OUT IF HE
IS GOING TO BE IN **YOUR** AREA. ... I know he often goes to Point Barrow
(spelling?) which is sooooo small that everyone would know where he is.
His songs are very "pro-people" and "pro-environment" .... its hard not to
enjoy him.
