HAWAII - SOVREIGNTY: PACNEWS-HONOLULU, PACNEWS ED-1, OCT 15 1993
Honolulu City Council chairman Garry Gill says the Hawaiian sovereignty
movement has "matured" and has called for "negotiating practical
operating procedures before it is too late."
Mr Gill made his comment after a meeting between city officials and
leaders of the Hawaiian community last night, which he described as the
most in-depth discussion he's heard on the issue.
Clayton Hee, chairman of the office of Hawaiian affairs, said the
establishment of a Hawaiian nation "will not mean an end of the Hawaii
we know."
He added, "it's just to get self-determination."
Mililani Trask of Ka Lahui Hawaii said anyone can be a participant, not
only Hawaiians.
Discussion panelists at the electronic town meeting at Honolulu Hale
proposed several ways, including exemption from county property taxes,
in which the city might recognise the unique status Hawaiians would have
under a sovereign entity. ..ends.
