November 16, 1993, Tuesday - Film, "The American
Experience" series continues. *"In the White Man's
Image," 1991/ In 1879, Army officer Richard Henry
Pratt opened the Carlisle School for Indians in an
attempt to "civilize" Native Americans. The ex-
periment involved teaching the Indians to read and
write English, and subjecting them to military-style
discipline. "Kill the Indian and save the man"
was the school's motto. Native Americans who
attended the school, which continued into the 1930's,
describe the consequences for a generation of Indians
of a humanist experiment gone awry. Produced by
Christine Lesiak and Matthew Jones. (60 minutes.)
