The leadership roles of women in American Indian cultures will be celebnrated i
n November during American Indian Heritage month at the Smithsonian.

A panel discussion, "From Beadwork to the Boardroom: Native American Women as
Leaders", will focus on the leadership roles that women play within their
tribes and communities. The discussion features Ada Deer(Menominee) assistant
secretary for Indian affairs at the Interior Dept, LaDonna Harris(Comanche)
director of Americans for Indian Opportunity, Leona Kakar, former chair of the
Ak-chin Indian Community, and Janine Pease-Windy Boy(Crow) President of Little
Big Horn College. The panelists will share personal anecdotes about their
accomplishments in the face of adversity, on Nov. 3 at 6:30 in the Hirshhorn's
Ring Auditorium.

"Native Women in Film" is the subject of 11 films that will be shown at noon in
the Ring Aud. The films and dates are "Separate Visions" "Jaune Quick-to-see
Smith" and "Daughters of the Anasazi" Nov. 7;"The Learning Path", Nov. 15;"To
Protect Mother Earth" Nov. 16;"Wilma P. Mankiller:Woman of Power" and "Rigo-
berta Menchu: Broken Silence" Nov. 17; "Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief" and
"Ten Dollars or Nothing" Nov.18;and "Words of Wisdom" and "Sun, Moon, and
Feather" Nov. 19.

The Smithsonian Associates is offering a slide-illustrated lecture by renowned
Chiricahua Apache sculptor Allen Houser on Nov. 15 at 8 PM in Natural History's
Baird Aud. The program in $9 fo Associates, and $12 for non-members. For

Other lectures include "Anglo Myths and Pueblo Artists" by William Truettner, c
urator of painting and sculpture at American Art. The talk, presented in
conjunction with the exhibition "Pueblo Indian Watercolors" will be held in
NMAA's Lecture Hall at 1 PM on Nov. 2.

"Sitting Crow Sculpture," and illustrated lecture by Sihasapa Lakota sculptor
Ted Garner will take place at noon on Nov 5 in Baird Aud. A lecture titled
"Between Pleasure and Pain:The Art of Kay Walkingstick" will be presented by
postdoctoral fellow Erin Valentine at 1 PM on Nov. 15 in NMAA's Lecture Hall.
"Enduring Spirits: Women of the Great Plains is the subject of a lecture by
Emma Hansen (Pawnee), curator of the Plains Indian Museum in Cody, Wyo., at
noon on Nov. 19 in Baird Aud.

The Renwick's Allen Bassing will discuss Native American Ceramics by artists of
the San Idelfonso Pueblo, N.M., with an emphasis on the pottery of Maria
Martinez at noon on Nov. 19 in the gallery. Kwakiutl aaartist Richard Hunt
will discuss his totem pole carvings, drums, boxes, screens, and jewelry at
noon on Nov. 26 in Baird Aud. Hunt will demonstrate his work on Nov. 23 and 28
from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 to 4:30 PM in MNH's Evans Gallery.

"The death of King Philip", Romulus Linney's poetic drama about King Philip's
waaar on the massachusetts colonies will be performed by the Washington Stage
Guild on Nov. 8 at 7 PM in the Portrait Gallery's Great Hall. Suzan Shown
Harjo, Cheyenne/Hodulgee Creek poet will lead a discussion after the perfor-

The performance "Native American Women's Music" will take place on Nov. 19 at
noon and Nov. 20 at 1 and 4 PM in American History's Carmichael Aud. The
program will include singers from the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Ore.,
and cometmporary singer-songwriter Pura Fe.

"The American Indian Collection" of films includes a 5-part series that will be
screened at NPG. A film will be shown daily at 12:30 PM thoughout Nov. Films &
dates are "Geronimo and the Apache Resistance" 11/1, Seasons of a Navajo" 11/2
"The Spirit of Crazy Horse" 11/8, "Myths and mound builders" 11/9, "Winds of
Change, a Matter of Promises" 11/15.

Other films include "In the Land of the War Canoes," 11/12 at noon in Baird;
"The Pueblo Presence" 11/20 and 11/23 at 1 PM in NMAA's Lecture Hall; "Roanoke:
The Unsolved Mystery of the Lost Colony" Nov. 23, 29 & 30 at 12:30 NPG; "The
Crooked Beak of Heaven" 11/26 2PM Baird; "Box of Treasures" 11/27-28 1PM at
Baird; "Franz Boas:1858-1942" 11/27 at 1:30, and 11/28 at 2:30 at Baird;
"Kleena" 11/27 at 2:30, Baird; and "Potlatch:A strict Law Forbids Us Dance"
11/28, 1:30 PM Baird.

Exhibits include "Chiefly Feasts:The Enduring Kwakiutl Potlatch" at NMNH
through Mar 6, 1994; The Arvin Gottlieb Collection:SW paintings at NMAA through
Mar 20, 1994;"Pueblo Indian Watercolors" and "Prints and Drawings from New
Mexico" at NMAA through Nov 29.

Family programs include "Flights of Fancy:Stories for Children" at Air & Space
Nov. 6,7,13,14,20 and 27 at 2PM in the Looking at Earth Gallery. A tour and
hands on workshop for kids aged 8-12 will take place at 1-2:30 on Nov 13 at

At NMAI's New York venue, Sioux dollmaker Ina McNeil wil give demos on Nov 2,3,
9, and 10 from 10:30AM to 12:30 PM. Andean wind instrument musician Pepe
Santana will perform on 11/4 and 1/18 from 10:30AM to 12:30PM. Also Aymara
music by Jose Montano on 11/13 from 10AM to 4PM, and quillwork by Donald
Jackson (Cherokee) on Nov 16,17,23,24 and 30 from 10AM to 12:30PM. Museum is
located at 3753 Broadway at 155th street.
