CANDANDAIGUA TREATY DAY

Fall 1993

On Thursday, November 11, 1993, the Canandaigua Treaty
Commemoration Committee will hold the annual observance of the
Canandaigua Treaty. Signed in Canandaigua on November 11, 1794, the
treaty, also known as the Pickering Treaty, is one of two agreements
between the United States and the Six Nations Iroquois that are key to
understanding Iroquois sovereighty. ...

A parade will start at 1:30 p.m. at the Canandaigua Elementary
School on West Gibson Street and proceed to the Council Rock on the lawn
of the Ontario County Courthouse on Main Street. A commemmoration
ceremony followed by speakers will begin at 2:00 p.m. This years
speakers will be Sheldon Fisher, Chief Leon Shenandoah, Onondaga, and
Chief Irving Powless, Jr., Onondaga. Attendees are invited to join a
potluck dinner at the Elementary School on Gibson Street. People who
wish to attend are asked to bring a dish to pass.
