RESEARCH TOOL.

A recent guide to Aboriginal people in the Australian Archives
has been published. Price $20. This is in keeping with one of
the recommendations of the report of the Royal Commission into
Deaths in Custody - to allow First Peoples easier access to
records. I understand that an errata sheet for the index will
be necessary.

The guide is to 1962. Records have to be 30 years old before
they are made public

The blurb is as follows:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in Commonwealth
Records.

A Guide to Records in the Australian Archives, ACT Regional
Office

Complied by Ros Fraser

This guide provides a way in to the large quantity of records
held by the Australian Archives, ACT Regional Office, which
relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. the
records date from the 1860s to the early 1960s' and relate to
all parts of Australia but especially to the Northern
Territory which the Commonwealth administered from 1911.

Published in the International Year for the World's Indigenous
People, this guide is a response to a recommendation of the
Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody that
government archives make records About Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people more accessible.

By providing information about the government departments,
offices and royal commissions which created these records and
by listing over 3,000 files and photographs, the guide will
allow further research into and re-evaluation of many issues,
policies and events involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people. The guide also includes information about
records which document the dealings which many Aboriginal
people had with the Commonwealth government and may provide
vital genealogical information about Aboriginal people and
their families.

The guide includes a 140-page index to people, places and
subjects mentioned in the records. It is an invaluable
resources for all those interested in twentieth-century
Aboriginal history.
