Western Activities Slammed

KUCHING - Datuk Abang Johari Tun Openg* said Western environmental
activists continued to criticise Malaysia, especially Sarawak, on the Penan
issue to gain sympathy and funds for their own purpose.
He said the group led by Bruno Manser of Switzerland had accused
Malaysia of using the armed forces to oppress the Penans in the jungles of
Sarawak.
"They have accused us of using military bulldozers and helicopters to attack
the Penans," he said when asked to comment on a recent statement by the
group. "Such a thing has never happened in Malaysia.... It's only Bruno's
tactics to gain sympathy from the world community," he said.
Abang Johari said Bruno and his group should be more sensitive to what
was happening in Somalia and Bosnia if they really wanted to champion
human rights. -END
