Can anyone tell me about criminal justice on reservations in the U.S.? I am an
undergraduate student at St. Mary's College of Maryland writing a papeo improve
some aspect of the criminal justice system. I am interested in exploring the
role of the federal government in criminal law on reservations vs. native
rights to deciding justice on their own terms. I have found hardly anything on
this topic and am concerned, as the due date is not far off. Some questions
that I'm hoping to be helped on are: who has jurisdiction for what aspects of
criminal procedure, what civil rights abuses are taking place, are the natives
equiped to take over the responsibilities of justice, where do trials take
place (on or off reservation), are Indians permitted on the jury, etc. I
would appreciate general and/or specific information, however you can help. A
list of sources would help a great deal... Thank you for your help.
