Thank you, Ms. Yvonne Swan for covering the so-called "land
dispute" on your radio show on KPFA San Francisco last night.
This afternoon we got several calls from the Los Angeles area from
people who had heard that some elderlies had been shot in the Big
Mountain area recently. No one was shot that we know of. We have
field staff who are on call and make regular visits in all the
various resister communities. When there is an incident we usually
hear about it within a few hours and send someone to investigate.
There have been no such reports from any of the people in Big
Mountain or any of the other resister communities, and nothing on
the news all week.
Callers also said they heard there had been massive livestock
impoundments. I called the BIA at Keams Canyon. The secretary at
their Land Operations Office (the livestock police) said that their
men had gone out "wednesday or thursday" to do an impoundment, but
they could not find the livestock and returned empty-handed. She
also told me that a lot of the men were taking "their day off"
today. That's a new one on me, and makes me wonder if some of them
are working on weekends. If the BIA is going to work weekends it
calls for alertness on the part of the families and their friends,
I think.
We will stay alert over the next few days. I will be out in the
field Mon. and Tues. but will post an update from the road if I can
figure out how.
I would like to thank Ms. Constance Maxey, Ms. Anna Christensen,
and Ms. Dierdre Meehan of Los Angeles, and also Ms. Helen Henry of
Denver. They all called in for information, and also let us know
there might be a problem. The time may come when fast, accurate
communicatons will be vital.
Please be very careful of rumors, check them out thoroughly before
taking action. In a war of words the opponent always tries to
destroy your credibility. Don't give him any opportunities.
Thank you.
