Announcement of 1994 NEH Summer Seminar

The National Endowment for the Humanities is sponsoring a 1994 Summer
Seminar at the University of Missouri on the topic of "The Oral Tradition
in Literature." The primary aim of this group will be to study living
oral traditions (African, Native American, South Slavic) alongside texts
with roots in oral tradition (the Bible, the Homeric epics, _Beowulf_,
e.g.). The approaches employed will have no special allegiance, but
will reflect the inherent pluralism of this comparative field.
The seminar is designed for college and university teachers from a
variety of disciplines: ancient, medieval, and modern literatures;
folklore; anthropology; linguistics; and others. Independent scholars
are also welcome.
Twelve successful applicants will receive stipends of $4000 each to
help defray expenses associated with the eight-week residence at the
University of Missouri (June 20-August 12). The staff will be pleased
to help all participants in locating inexpensive housing, arranging
child care, and related activities. Seminarists will be appointed
visiting faculty and will have direct access to all research facilities.
For application forms, please contact the seminar director:
