FUND SET UP TO FOSTER TRIBAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

-- Tribal leaders hope a new 8 million dollar NATIONAL fund set up
to promote Indian economic development will benefit Northwest tribes.
The organization called, "First Nations", plans to distribute the
money for Indian projects over a three year period through its Eagle Staff
Fund.
The group will begin accepting applications in a few months and then
review and distribute grants.
The money has come largely from private foundations.
Fund director Sherry Salway Black says Indians have been dependent
on federal money for too long. She says the fund is an opportunity to draw
support from the private, philanthropic sources.
