Mexican Consulate
El Paso, Texas
United States of America

Honorable Consulate:

We are alarmed by the reports from the press of the armed rebellion
by the indigenous population against political and economic
injustice in the state of Chiapas.

Alarmed because for many years we have been aware of the second
class treatment of indigenous populations in Mexico and fear that
the racial chauvinism will turn into brutal repression rather than
compassion for a social ill that is five hundred years old.

Tonal Teokalli is an inter-tribal organization dedicated to
securing the rights of indigenous peoples in the United States
especially indigenous persons of Mexican ancestry. We feel it is
right with the spirit of our tradition to demand that the Mexican
Government respect the rights of our ethnic brothers and sisters of
Chiapas and recognize the legitimate social concerns of the
rebellion.

Tonal Teokalli does not support the idea of the government and
landlords taking over the lands on which the people live.

In the Spirit of Geronimo and Cuauhtemoc,

Thaddeus Cunejo
General Secretary
