First Nations Indigenous Environmental Network
and Canadian Environmental Network
RENEW RELATIONSHIP
On November 20 - 21, 1993, representatives from the Canadian
Environmental Network (CEN) and the First Nations Indigenous
Environmental Network (formerly known as the Indigenous
People's Caucus) met to explore the possibilities of a
future relationship. The meeting was held in Eskasoni,
Mi'kmaq Territory at the invitation of Sulian Stone Eagle
Herney D First Nations Indigenous Environmental Network
(FNIEN) representative and CEN steering committee member.
This meeting was held to explore possibilities of First
Nations working together to stop the destruction of Mother
Earth. Difficulties of the past would be laid to rest and
work would begin immediately to build the foundation for
cooperation. The Canadian Environmental Network has
received clear instruction from its own membership to
involve First Nations iecause a collective effort is
required to ensure a healthy planet for the future of all
children.
As allies, believing in the same cause, we hope that we can
all come together to achieve one simple goal: TO SAVE
MOTHER EARTH. All races are included. All races are
suffering from the damage being done to Mother Earth. Unity
and mutual respect create the possibility for recovery of
Mother Earth.
The CEN reaffirms its desire to work in partnership with and
to support the organizing efforts of the FNIEN. Special
efforts will be made to increase First Nations'
representation in CEN activities and also to encourage
involvement regionally and locally.
The First Nations Indigenous Environmental Network will
remain independently organised. Indigenous rules and
protocol will be followed. Membership in the network will
be for First Nation people regardless of status. No First
Nation person will be restricted from participation. The
FNIEN will be organised coast to coast with regional
organising based on territories. The FNIEN may choose to
establish caucuses. Sacred ceremonies will be an integral
part of this organising and will respect the diversity of
First Nations. Associated membership for non-natives will
be one means to include as well. However this, and all int
unity and respect in each of your regions. Celebrate the
four sacred colours of people and begin the work together as
one.
