It is not true that article 27 of the Mexican constitution was "quashed" and
that communal land ownership was ended. Article 27 was amended to allow
ejidos to be divided into individual parcels, which could then be sold. The
ejidos have at least nominal control over this decision. These changes have
made it easier for land held by indigenous and peasant communities to make its
way into the hands of agribusinesses and large landholders, including cattle
ranchers, definitely a change for the worse, but it is misinformation to say
that ejidos have been abolished in Mexico!
