You can get a list of Ecuadorian environmental and indigenous
organizations by anonymous ftp to:

ftp.u.washington.edu (notice that ftp is part of the address)

in the directory:

pub/user-supported/consbio/docs/country-files/south-america

with the file names:

ecuaorg1.txt
ecuaorg2.txt

There are also files there for Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela.

Other good sources of information are:

Ediciones Abya - Yala, Casilla 8513, Quito, Ecuador. Book publisher that
publishes a large number of books and periodicals dealing with
indigenous issues. Several volumes concentrate exclusively on the
Shuar-Achuar.

Gennino, Angela (ed.)(1990). Voices from the Rainforest: A Resource
and Action Guide. Rainforest Action Network, 301 Broadway, Suite A,
San Francisco, 94133, USA. Tel: (1 45) 398 4404.

South and Meso American Indian Information Center (SAIIC)(1992). 1992
International Directory and Resource Guide: 500 Years of Resistence.
SAIIC, P.O. Box 28703, Oakland, CA 94604, USA. Tel: (1 510)
834 4263. Fax: (1 510) 834 4264.

South and Meso American Indian Information Center (SAIIC)(1993). Daughters
of Abya Yala. SAIIC, Oakland, CA.

A good recent book that deals with resource use and management among the
Shuar-Achuar, which treats their political organization in the face of
colonization extensively, is:

Rudel, Thomas K. (1993). Tropical Deforestation: Small farmers and land
clearing in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Methods and Cases in Conservation
Science. Columbia University Press, New York.
