CONPAZ, a nongovernmental organization in San Cristobal de Las
Casas, Chiapas is closely following human rights cases and is
sharing their findings. The lastest case is one that I was involved
in the town of Las Margaritas.
Background:
On January 17, 1994 I interviewed the fathers of Jorge Mariano
Solis, 21, and Eduardo Gomez Hernandez, 22, reported that their
sons had been taken away by authorities from the central plaza in
Las Margaritas, Chiapas on January 16, 1994 at 6:45 p.m. One
witness said that he saw Solis in the municipal palace and then
being taken away by the military, bound and blindfolded.
On January 24, 1994 the bodies of Gomez Hernandez and Mariano Solis
were found on the ground near the community of Agua Prieta, Las
Margaritas.
The autopsy results of Jorge Mariano Solis, 21, and Eduardo Gomez
Hernandez, 22, are not being officially released by the government,
but a doctor with a human rights groups reported after observing
the autopsies that the deaths were from the result of stab wounds
with a short blade. There was no evidence of torture, he reported.
Eduardo Gomez Hernandez: 5 wounds in the back, 3 wounds in the
front, 1 defensive wound in the wrist. Jorge Mariano Solis: 4 stab
wounds in the chest, three of them in the heart. Both bodies were
in states of advanced decay and showed signs that they were being
devoured by animals while on the ground.
