Canberra ACT 2600

6 January 1994

Dear Mr Reyburn,

I write to acknowledge your letter of 22
December to the Governor-General asking him to withhold assent
from the Native Title Bill.

When considering whether to give assent to a
bill after it has passed both Houses of Parliament, the
Governor-General is advised on legal and constitutional points
by the Attorney-General. As the Governor-General was advised
of no legal or constitutional reason to withhold assent, he
gave assent to the Native Title Bill on 24 December 1993.

Yours sincerely,

(signed)
Clare Nairn
Deputy Official Secretary
