PRAYER VIGIL FOR LEONARD PELTIER
TORONTO- Anishnawbe Health Toronto and the Leonard Peltier Defense
Committee (Canada) are co-hosting an 18-hour Prayer Vigil for
Leonard Peltier. It will be held at Anishnawbe Health Toronto, 225
Queen Street East, (Queen and Sherbourne), starting at midnight
Saturday February 5th, 1994 until 6:00 pm Sunday February 6th,
1994. February 6th, 1994 marks the 18th anniversary of Leonard
Peltier's false imprisonment.
Leonard Peltier, Lakota-Anishnawbe, is serving two consecutive life
sentences for the false conviction of the murder of two FBI agents
on June 26, 1975 at the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota.
Peltier's conviction was based on falsified evidence and testimony.
U.S. authorities have admitted that Peltier was extradited from
Canada based on false affidavits. However with all this information
Leonard Peltier has not been released or granted a new trial.
Speakers at the Vigil have been active in Peltier's struggle for
freedom. The special guest speaker will be Bob Robideau, Lakota
Sioux, charged with the same crime as Peltier, but acquitted on the
grounds of self-defense. Other speakers will include: Art Solomon,
Ojibway Elder; Frank Dreaver, Leonard Peltier Defense Committee
(Canada); Lou Gurwitz, U.S. lawyer and activist; Chief Gordon
Peters, Chiefs of Ontario; Jimmy Groat, Aboriginal Legal Services;
Judith Pamp, Three Fires Society; Michelle Murphy, Native Women's
Resource Centre; Friends of the Lubicon.
A Sunrise Ceremony on Sunday morning will be conducted by
representatives of the Oneida Nation. Films about Peltier's
struggle will be shown, including "Incident at Oglala" and "Warrior
- The Life of Leonard Peltier". All people are welcome to join in
praying for Peltier's freedom and for the liberation of all
indigenous people on Turtle Island.
Anishnawbe Health Toronto is a Native healing centre with a vision
of full recovery for Aboriginal people through a return to
traditional ways. For the last 18 years, the Leonard Peltier
Defense Committee (Canada) have been fighting for Peltier's freedom
and the freedom of all oppressed indigenous people.
