It's been years since I read it, but the following book on sand
painting impressed me very much at the time:

AUTHOR Wyman, Leland Clifton, 1897-

TITLE Southwest Indian drypainting / Leland C. Wyman.

EDITION 1st ed.

PUBLISHED Santa Fe: School of American Research;
Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, c1983.

DESCRIPTION xxiii, 320 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 26 cm.
Includes index. Bibliography: p. 299-311.

Most of the text concerns the Dine (Navajo), but the sand
painting of a number of other tribes is also examined.
