POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

TITLE: Special Collections Librarian/Cataloger

EMPLOYMENT TERMS: FY, tenure track, minimum appointment at Assistant Professor

AVAILABLE DATE: July 1, 1994

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Catalogs publications and manuscripts for the
Merrill G. Burlingame Special Collections with Yellowstone National Park and
Western history as the central focus for the materials to be cataloged.
Shares in maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the bibliographic and
holdings information in our integrated online system (INLEX); original and
complex copy cataloging in various formats (e.g., maps, postcards, videos,
diaries, posters) on WLN. Provides reference services in the Special
Collections Reading Room; library instruction and orientation to students,
faculty, staff and the general public.

Library faculty participate in library and university governance committees
and must meet expectations for service, professional activity, and research &
creativity for promotion and tenure.

DESCRIPTION OF MSU & BOZEMAN: Montana State University, the state's land
grant institution, is located in the Gallatin Valley in southwestern Montana
90 miles north of Yellowstone National Park. The university has an enrollment
exceeding 10,700 and offers undergraduate degrees in 47 fields and graduate
degrees in 38 fields with an emphasis in science and technology. The
Libraries' collection numbers more than 500,000 volumes and one million+
microforms.

QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED - MLS from an ALA accredited program, plus an
additional graduate degree. Experience with original cataloging of rare books
and manuscript materials using AACR2, LC, LCSH and MARC. Experience providing
reference services in a Special Collections environment. Excellent written
and oral communication skills. PREFERRED - Experience in the following areas:
cataloging with MARC-AMC format; working in a research library; using an
online catalog and a major bibliographic utility (WLN preferred); and,
performing professional reference in an electronic environment. The
successful candidate should have a demonstrated teaching ability, a commitment
to library instruction, an understanding of research methods and strategies,
and familiarity with the history and culture of the American West.

SALARY: $32,000 minimum: position contingent upon funding
