Support Needed for Speaking Tour of Mexican Human Rights Activists
The Kitchener-Waterloo Chapter of the Mexican Solidarity
Network is trying to arrange to bring two human rights
activists from Chiapas, Mexico, to Canada to speak about
their experiences and the Zapatista movement.
The Mexican Soilidarity Network is asking for the support
of other community groups across Canada in the form of:
-contributing money to help pay for plane tickets,
-hosting a public event in your community,
-arranging for transport/lodging of the speakers.
The Mexican Solidarity Network is a group of concerned
individuals dedicated to giving the Canadian public a
more accurate picture of current events in Mexico than
what they are receiving in the mainstream media.
Both speakers were contacted by Mexican Solidarity
Network member Debbie Chapman, who travelled to Mexico
March 12-27 of this year.
Enrique Perez Lopez is president of the Human Rights
Association South Southeast, a non-governmental
organization (NGO) founded in 1991 which addresses such
issues as the NAFTA, Mexican Constitutional reform, and
indigenous land rights issues.
Herman Villatorio Barrios is a representative of the
Executive Coordinator of the State Council of Indigenous
and Peasant Organizations in Chiapas (CEOIC), which was
formed on January 1, 1994 to promote peace in Chiapas and
look for a political and negotiated solution to the armed
conflict.
Please e-mail the Kitchener-Waterloo Chapter of the
Mexican Solidarity Network at "gccwat@web.apc.org" or
phone the Global Community Centre at 519-746-4090 as soon
as possible to indicate your interest in supporting this
tour. We would like to arrange the tour for early May if
possible.
