[ I got word today that there was a story about the reported incident in the
_San Francisco Chronicle_ on Tuesday, March 29, 1994 by Stephen Schwartz,
Chronicle Staff Writer, Edition: FINAL, Section: News, Page: A20. The only
physical conflict mentioned was coffee thrown at one woman by another. It
did not tie Ward Churchill to the attack, and mentions him only by way of
offering a quote in which he says "Their faction (the Bellecourts) con-
siders AIM to be a corporation -- a career -- but we consider it to be a
national liberation movement." The other side is represented in the story
by a statement from the Bellecourt faction, saying that it contends that
the Castillo followers are a "radical group" that acts as a front for
writer Ward Churchill, whom the Bellecourts say is "a non-Indian masquer-
ading as an Indian writer."
The report says "Two police officers intervened and eventually quelled the
disturbance" and that no arrests were made.
