Since Tuesday, April 12, leaders from the Paresi Tribe (Rondon
Station) located outside the city of Diamamtino, 200 km from
Cuiaba, State of Mato Grosso in Brazil are trying to convince
authorities to revoke the decision made in giving permission to
farmers to take over their land. Biogenese - Center for the
Conservation of Nature in Cuiaba was asked by their leaders to
please help them. The Paresi people have no place to go. They
told the President of Biogenese in Brazil, Mara de C.F. Carvalho,
that they will die before they leave their land. They also said
that they are armed. The Paresi people have until April 19 to
abandon their land. Mara de C.F. Carvalho said that the only
reason that farmers and the Federal Police haven't attacked the
Paresi yet was the fact that the Federal Police of Brazil are
currently on strike. It looks like they will come back to work
full force around the 19th of April. Because Biogenese in Brazil
and here in the U.S. were caught off guard, we are not quite
prepared to stop such a decision. We need the assistance and support
from indigenous organizations/legal organizations/environmental
organizations/citizens concerned with the well being of the indigenous
people of Brazil immediately. Please write or contact Biogenese here
in the U.S. or in Brazil.
