In 1988 the General Electric Company was contructing a new plant near
Mount Vernon in southern Indiana. Construction activities uncovered
3000 artifacts and human remains. Presently, the General Electric
company is listening to the Native American community. It's been
GE's position that this place was a cemetary and the right thing
to do is to return all of the items to the earth.
However, the Society for Preservation of Indiana Arachaeology and
other anthropologists would like to see the excavated items studied
for a period of two years.
On Monday May 9th at 1:30 PM the Governors Native American Advisory
Council Meeting will meet. Archaeologists will be at this
meeting in force to try to persuade the Council to allow them
to have the artifacts for study. It is the position of the Native
American Indian community that the remains and artifacts should be
repatriated immediately.
We are asking for the Indian community to show up in force to tell
the Governor's Advisory Council that we do not want the artifacts
turned over to the archaeologists. The Indian community is meeting
at 12:00 PM at the Government Center South Conference Room #1.
Please show up. Otherwise, send fax letters of support to 317-253-5244.
