The following is part of an ongoing debate about Yakima Indians fishing
for Salmon. I'm hoping that others with a more "enlightened" and
knowledgeable voice will join in. The discussion needs it!

Hmmmm...I think that Marge has a good point....Please don't
take this wrong, since I believe that Native American culture
should be kept alive........Perhaps if salmon fishing of ANY
sort were banned for a period of time (time enough to let the
population grow), then the Natives would be able to resume
fishing in their traditional manner. Please keep in mind
that the traditional fishing practices have not been banned
everywhere, just in a few prime spawning areas.

I must also point out that it is complete myth that the
Natives "lived in harmony" with their enviornment. They were
enviormental abusers, just like almost every other culture.
Landfills are not a Euroamerican idea, the natives had
landfills hundreds of years before the Euros arrived......I
personally believe that the enviorment is the largest common
"gem" between cultures. My point being, that cultural or
not, environmental abuse is NOT OKAY! If the Natives truly
respected the environment as they supposedly do, they would
allow the salmon populations to recover.
