LET'S KEEP OUR PROMISES

April 29 was a momentous day. Tribal leaders from 547 Native
American Nations met with President Clinton at the White House
to discuss their relationship(s) with the United States government
and its various agencies. At this meeting President Clinton promised
better relationships and a new era of respect.
Approximately one week earlier (April 21-23), spiritual leaders and
elders of mannations met on the Mesas in Hopi Country. As they
met, the Hopi land, already desecrated by power lines, awaited
further attack from bulldozers already in place. Soon the Hopi will no
longer be able to conduct their ancient spiritual ceremonies because
of the desctruction of theirsacred land. Can there be a greater
lack of respect than to destroy churches, synagogues, mosques, and
other symbolic places of spirituality? In Bosnia we are
witnessing the destruction of places of worship; let's hope we
can do better than that.
We strongly urge that words be immediately put into practice and
that our President and the U.S. government put a stop to the
desecration of the Hopi land. What better evidence is there of good
that than to keep one's promise.
PLEASE wite to the President and your representatives and ask them
to bring a stop to the desecration of the Hopi land.
