Help: proper terminology for indian names

I encounter some difficulty when I have to quote historical facts involving
Indian nations. London Colonial Office's records used different names, or
different variations of the same name, for a single entity.

Is there an accepted convention as to what are the proper names, in english
and, if possible, in french, for Indian Nations?
