Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes

I have a big problem: According to my mother, aunt and grandmother, my
great-great-grandmother was from the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes.
She married my great-great-grandfather, a former Shaker by the last name
of Burnett. Here lies the problem - The only person who had any record
of the family history was my great grandmother. When her house got
broken into many years ago the strongbox with all the family documents
was stolen, and she passed away in the late 80's. Can anyone tell me how
I might go about getting information or documentation pertaining to my
Indian heritage? I don't want my children (who are also part Cherokee)
to grow up not knowing about their ancestors. Thanks - Sylvia Rowe
