Here at UB, we have a Native American Studies program within the American
Studies department. Michael Frisch is the director of graduate studies,
and is a highly respected researcher of folklore. Oren Lyons and John
Mohawk are both faculty members, whom I can personally vouch for as
good people. In other departments, there is Phil Stevens in anthro (my
own department) who used to be editor of the journal New York Folklore,
Dennis Tedlock in English who set the standard for translating Mayan
codexes, and various people in the linguistics department who specialize
in Native American languages. I don't know if there is a concentration
in literature and language in the NAS program, though.
