Dear Mr. Prime Minister
The issue of the Kemano Completion Project and its potential devastation on
the lives of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation and on the salmon fish stocks of
the Nechako Watershed has been brought to my attention.
I believe that construction of Kemano 2 should be completely halted until
it has undergone a full federal Environmental Assessment and Review
Procedure. It is unthinkable, given present day realities, that a hydro-
electric mega-project of this size should be exempt from such a review.
A B.C. Utilities Commission Hearing is insufficient in its scope given the
magnitude of the impact on the First Nations people, the fish life and the
environment.
In October 1993, as Leader of the Opposition, you wrote to Mr. Hummel,
Researcher for the Cheslatta t'en, assuring him that the Liberal Party of
Canada "supports a review of the implications of the Kemano Completion
Project." Now that you are Prime Minister and the Liberal Party is in
power, when can I expect action to ensure that the Alcan project is
subjected to a full environmental review?
