Perhaps not the northeast, but I have a map that shows areas of alcoholic
beverages in Precontact times, and it shows that the area around Chesapeake
Bay, and a good portion of the Carolinas & some Virginia had them. It says
that in the SE they made a persimmon wine. And it agrees with you that they
were more likely to have been made in areas where agriculture was highly
developed. For the most part, it says, their use was secular.
