I can't find the exact source right now, but Stanton Peele (author of "the
Diseasing of America" and "The Truth About Recovery and Addiction") mentions
in one of the those books that Native Americans didn't experience what is now
referred to alcoholism until after they'd watched how the Europeans reacted
to alcohol. In other words, they might drink, but they didn't get drunk; if
they did over imbibe, they were more likely to go to sleep than to get into
fights. It was the example set by the Euros (according to Peele) that led to
the present day problems. As soon as I can find the exact quote, and his
support sources, I'll post them. Regardless, it's an interesting concept.
