>YOUR CHOICE OF UNIVERSITIES FOR INDIAN LAW STUDIES
>
>A friend of mine, professor at Laval University (Quebec City), will begin
>a sabbatical year in 1995. He's a known expert in constitutional law, the
>Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to be more precise, but he would
>like to expand his expertise to other matters: namely Indian law. So he
>plans to spend that year in United States.
>
>Your help is most needed to help him choose the best place for a researcher
>in Indian law (I must say, I'm curious too).
>
>There's one fact to take into account. Having a young family of four, he
>can't afford to go to a big and expensive city like New York or Boston.
>
>What, then, would be the best three or four universities to go to?
>
Let me put a plug in for the University of Wisconsin - Madison as an
excellent location for both legal research and cultural exposure. Not only
does the Law School here rank fairly high nation-wide generally, we are
rapidly becoming THE University for Indian Law. Not only do we offer
general and advanced courses in Indian law, the Law School established the
Great Lakes Indian Law Center. So far, the Indian Law Center is the only
one in the country to place law students on reservations to work with tribal
legal departments. When we began in 1991, the program funded three
students. This summer, we have expanded to providing 8 (of the 11) Wisconsin
Tribes
with 22 law students to assist for 8 weeks this summer. Wisconsin Tribes
are enthusiastic about the Indian Law Center, as we provided legal research
and related support throughout the academic year. Gaming has provided an
avenue for economic diversity, and therefore, the legal questions are many
and varied, offering any potential law student or researcher an extremely
stimulating and challenging environment. As acting director, I can provide
more information also about the community of Madison, if you're interested.
Mii-gwech!
