HELLO Folks:

News for fans of Freire. In the two decades since Freire's groundbreaking
_Pedagogy of the Oppressed_, what new directions are emerging in emancipatory
education? This important conference explores recent theory and practice.

PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED is a new conference sponsored by the University of
Nebraska at Omaha's College of Continuing Studies and College of Fine Arts,
Dramatic Arts Department. PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED will be an inter-
disciplinary meeting with sessions devoted to the scholarly exchange of
information, research methodologies, and pedagogical approaches.

A Call for Papers is announced. Papers and presentations on all aspects of
emanipatory education, including power relations in the learning environment,
systems of structural privilege and oppression, and subversive challenege.
The conference will be multidisciplinary, and welcomes research from academic
areas such as education, philosophy and religion, Black studies, international
studies, sociology, theatre, performing arts, fine arts, literature, history,
counseling, economics, public administration, social work, criminal justice,
and gerontology. Abstracts submitted by September 26, 1994.

Special guest will be AUGUSTO BOAL, author of _Theatre of the the Oppresses_.
His pioneering work in interactive drama began in the 1960s in Sao Paolo,
Brazil. Arrested in 1971, he was exiled to Europe. Now, he directs the Center
for the Theatre of the Oppressed in Rio de Janeiro.
