I'm trying to compile a list of all the current letter writing campaigns
and other work in support of native issues (groups in need of supplies,
donations, volunteers, etc.). Please send details on any such things
that you know about.
I'd like to gather such information for periodic, efficient dissemation
to interested parties, so they can help. I'd like to provide
summaries of the situations and names and addresses of those to whom
one could write in protest, send donations, or request more information.
Several of these have been covered on Native-L, but at scattered times.
Once I get a list of all the issues, I'll search the Native-L
archives, as well as the many artciles I've saved, for pertinent
information. Also, anyone that is connected to these issues, please
e-mail me with the most current information, updates, etc.
Here is a small list of what I have so far:
Leonard Peltier; political prisoner
New Lenox, IL; burial sites
Cahuila, CA; toxic dumping on tribal lands; illegal takeover of
tribal council
Prairie Island; nuclear waste on tribal lands
Mount Graham; University building observatory on sacred mountain (also
jeopardizing an endangered species)
Innu issues; Air force fly-overs, Hydro-Quebec, others?
Chiapas / Zapatistas
Hawaii Natives; sovereignty and other issues (?)
South American Natives under attack in Brazil, Ecuador, Guatamala
(elsewhere, too?)
Various Mascots
I forget where, but the federal government "temporarily" took away
part of a rez for a bombing range during WWII, and now wants
to turn it into a park - anyone have any more on this?
