NativeNet: (important) reminder on addresses

I'd just like to remind subscribers to the NativeNet lists, including
NATIVE-L, NATCHAT, NAT-EDU, NAT-LANG, and NAT-HLTH, to which I'm sending
this article, about how to correspond directly with someone who has
posted an article to one of the lists.

First, please be aware that you CANNOT communicate with the author of
an article by using the "reply" command of your mail system. The headers
of the mail messages from the LISTSERV machine (which is TAMVM1 for all
but the NAT-EDU list, which uses INDYCMS) are set so that any reply you
send will go back to the posting address of the appropriate mailing list,
so that it is easy to post a followup article.

If you want to reply via e-mail to someone who has posted a message to
one of the NativeNet lists, you'll need to use some form of the address
that appears in the "Original Sender:" line that appears at the beginning
of each article you receive from the LISTSERV software.

For example, if you receive an article which contains the line:

Original Sender: machine.site.edu!someuser

you may be able to use the address "machine.site.edu!someuser" (if your
mail system recognizes "bangpath" addresses), or (more likely) you will
need to render it in a different form, which you can do by exchanging the
two address components on either side of the "bang" ("!") character and
replacing it with an "at-sign" ("@"). Thus in this case, the address
"someuser@machine.site.org" should work. If there is an additional address
component prior to the basic address, such as in:

Original Sender: gateway.org!machine.site.edu!someuser

just discard that component ("gateway.org" in this case) to produce the
same address as was shown previously ("someuser@machine.site.edu").

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.
