NativeNet: chat on NATIVE-L list?

It has been my policy to disallow back-and-forth dialogue on the NATIVE-L
list, in order to keep the channel clear for informational items, which
can be themselves voluminous enough to make it difficult for some folks
to keep up. The NATCHAT list was created for the purpose of allowing dis-
cussions, however.

Lately, some articles posted to NATIVE-L have provoked discussions, which
have resulted when the followup comments that I have allowed have caused
others to want to respond. I have generally routed such responses to
NATCHAT, hoping that those who wish to discuss the subject further will be
content to do so there. However, I have just received a message from some-
one who apparently feels that the "Cherokee religion" thread should be
allowed to continue on NATIVE-L, and who writes:

I do not care for the level of "discussion" that goes on the "chat"
and "newsgroup" nets. I find them boring and childish at best.

Meanwhile, others have submitted responses on this topic to NATIVE-L. It
is not my wish to censor or suppress these articles, but rather to have
this topic discussed in the forum designed for that purpose.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has an opinion on this subject.
Please address your messages to me (gst@gnosys.svle.ma.us). I will read
all responses that are sent, and will at least acknowledge them, though I
may not have time to offer much of a response to each one. However, if
there is sufficient interest, I will summarize the opinions expressed.

Thanks for your help.

Gary
