Univ. of Arizona to Begin Clearcutting Mt. Graham With No Money
---------------------------------------------------------------

The U.S. Forest Service has granted the University of Arizona permission to
begin cutting trees at the top of Mt. Graham on July 1, 1994. The U of A is
expected to begin cutting very close to the beginning of the month. The main
issue at hand is that the U of A doesn't have enough money to begin
construction on the telescopes, but they still want to show potential
investors that they are making some sort of progress. After losing 28
potential investors (leaving them no partners in all of North America), the U
of A is financially strapped, and can not begin construction until several
more partners sign on. (which, due to the track record, doesn't seem possible)

The Mt. Graham Coalition is in court (as we speak) attempting to get an
injunction on the cutting, because of the lack of viability for the project,
as well as the fact that it is in violation of the ESA, NEPA, AIRFA and
several other laws.

We can't afford to wait for the courts, time is running out! Action is needed
immediately!

*** CALL TO ACTION ***

This senseless waste of time and trees can NOT be allowed! Activists are
needed IMMEDIATELY in Tucson, AZ to begin strategizing for how to stop the
chainsaws from ripping apart this fragile and ecosystem. THIS IS VERY URGENT,
as your attendance could make the difference in stopping this massacre.

If you think that you can make it down and help out with the campaign (from
June 25 - ?), then strap on your monkeywrench, pack a lot of tofu, and give us
a call for directions!

Mt. Graham Action Line: (602) 795-2527

-- If you can't make it:

* CALL U of A President Manuel Pacheco and let him know that you are one
of the people that WILL NOT ALLOW these trees to be cut! Ask why he is
cutting if he doesn't have the money to build the scopes!

Things need to heat up A LOT on Mt. Graham, so take that summer vacation a few
weeks early, blow off work and get yourself to the campaign of the summer!

University of Arizona (UA) Begins Illegal Tree Removal On Mt. Graham --------------------------------------------------------------------

First-hand information has been gathered that proves that the UA has begun the process of clearing the trees for the Columbus Telescope (LBT). The first phase of digging up the smaller trees for transplantation has begun. The Mt. Graham Coalition was first alerted to this fact on 6/25, but it is assumed that the removalhad begun earlier than that.

This is in direct violation of the law, as the UA has NOT received a final site plan approval from the U.S. Forest Service. The Forest Service promised in a public letter that no activity would begin on the site before July 1, 1994.

These latest actions can only mean that the UA plans on clearcutting the site as soon as possible, trying to beat a court ordered injunction that could come as early as July 5 or so.

WHAT YOU CAN DO ---------------

- We need able-bodied (and able-minded) activists to come down to the South West and join the front-lines of our opposition. If you can come, then please call (602) 795-2527 for directions and more info (as much as we can give)

- CALL the Safford Ranger District at (602) 670-5462 and ask to speak to Richard Kvale, District Ranger. Ask him why the UA is being allowed to remove trees from the proposed telescope site when they don't even have a final site approval. Also tell him that, as a citizen, you demand that he not grant the final site approval until the UA can prove that they can actually afford to begin construction. Obviously, ad lib as much as you need to!

- PLEASE send us money, food, prayers, etc.and anything else that you can think of, as this campaign is REALLY heating up. Call or send e-mail to this account and tell us what you have done. Send all packages and donations care of: SEAC SW, PO Box 1891, Tucson, AZ 85702-1891.

This is not the time to sit back and watch other activists do the work! We need some serious support in order to make our opposition as strong and effective as it can be. At the very least, give us a call and let us know that you care! =-)

As a participant in the hunger strike occurring to try to deter the U of A from cutting before the injunction hearing happens, I would like to urge everyone to do whatever they can. The action alerts posted so far have been very informative, and I hope that people out there are calling and putting the pressure on all sides to stop this destruction of sacred and ecologically unique land. Thanks to everyone who is supporting us. Through envirolink you can send mail automatically to Pacheco -- under the same heading for sending mail to the pres and vice pres and our congresspeople!

Currently in Tucson, In the spirit of the Earth,

Howdy Folks-

Here is a listing of names, phone/fax numbers and e-mail addresses. All of these people need to be told that all of the work being done on the mountain at least must be stopped until the courts can rule on the injunction and definitely should be stopped until the courts can figure out if they are even cutting trees on the right site in the first place!
