Assembly of First Nations election in Canada

Gary...being a newbie here, I hope this is the right procedure to
follow. I hope to also be able to submit the second ballot results.

Here are the first ballot results for the election of National Chief of the
Assembly of First Nations in Canada, which represents 533,000 on reserves.

Votes cast 458
Required to win 275

Ovide Mercredi (Incumbent) 247 (53.93%)
Wally McKay, Sachigo Lake First Nation, Ontario 95 (20.74%)
Mike Mitchell, Akwesane Mohawk Nation, Ontario 54 (11.79%)
Konrad Sioui, Huron, Quebec 31 ( 6.77%)
Delia Opekokew, Canoe Lake First Nation, Sask. 30 (6.55%)
(one ballot was rejected)

According to AFN Charter, 60% is required to win, therefore voting has
begun on the second ballot, with results expected in 3-4 hours. All but
Delia Opekokew will be on the second ballot.

(Note: Only about 100 of the 200 Chiefs from British Columbia attended the
AFN convention in Saskatoon.)
