First, I had some system problems last night which may have resulted in
a few lost articles to the NATIVE-L and NATCHAT lists. If you submitted
something yesterday and don't see it today or tomorrow, you should probably
re-submit the article. Sorry for the bother.
I'm preparing to turn over the moderation tasks for NATIVE-L and NATCHAT to
a NativeNet subscriber by the name of Jay Brummett, whose name many of you
will recognize, if he meets with your approval. I'll be relaying an article
from Jay to NATIVE-L and NATCHAT soon in which he introduces himself. The
switchover would occur late this month. I'm hoping that the time that this
switch frees up for me can be devoted at least partially to the "electronic
outreach" education project and helping get a NativeNet "World Wide Web"
site set up (Marc Becker is presently doing most of the work). I'll have
more to say on that subject later.
Again, I'd like to remind everyone that the LISTSERV sites that handle
broadcast of all but the NAT-EDU mailing list live at a site called "TAMVM1."
The full address is "listserv@tamvm1.tamu.edu" - the NAT-EDU list is at
INDYCMS ("listserv@indycms.iupui.edu"). If you want to unsubscribe or to
"set nomail" mode when you go on vacation, please use one of these addresses,
*not* "listserv@gnosys.svle.ma.us" (which doesn't really exist) - and don't
use the posting addresses for the mailing lists (like "native-l@gnosys.svle
.ma.us"), since all mail sent to those addresses goes to the moderator.
If anyone stops getting articles from any of the NativeNet lists (especially
the very active ones, like NATIVE-L and NATCHAT), it might be because some
problem has arisen at or near your site that causes your mail to become un-
deliverable, in which case, error messages will get sent back to my system,
and I may need to turn off mail to your account. If you stop hearing from
one of the lists, and there has been a problem at your site, you might want
to get in touch with me when the problem gets resolved, so your subscription
can be re-instated. (I hope that eventually we can have a volunteer check
out addresses that have suddenly "gone bad" periodically, so we don't lose
people unnecessarily - but I don't have time to handle it now or any time
soon.)
If anyone plans to go away for an extended period, it would be a good idea
to use the "set nomail" command to turn off mail to your account from any
of the mailing lists - or unsubscribe if you'll be away for an extended
period (see instructions below).
I hope you're all having a pleasant summer (or winter, if you're in the
southern hemisphere)...
In order to unsubscribe from one of the NativeNet mailing lists, you
need to send a message to the appropriate listserver. For the NATIVE-L,
NATCHAT, NAT-1492, NAT-LANG and NAT-HLTH lists, send a message to
"LISTSERV@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU" saying:
signoff NATIVE-L
or
signoff NATCHAT
or
signoff NAT-1492
or
signoff NAT-LANG
or
signoff NAT-HLTH
For NAT-EDU, send the message "signoff NAT-EDU" instead to the address
"LISTSERV@INDYCMS.IUPUI.EDU"
If you just want to turn off mail during a period of absence, so that your
mailbox doesn't overflow, send instead the message:
set NATIVE-L nomail
or
set NATCHAT nomail
or
set NAT-1492 nomail
or
set NAT-LANG nomail
or
set NAT-HLTH nomail
For NAT-EDU, send the message "set NAT-EDU nomail" instead to the address
"LISTSERV@INDYCMS.IUPUI.EDU"
(Later you just say "set NATIVE-L mail," etc. to re-enable mail to the
accounts.) You can send any number of these requests in the same message.
