I want to support Gary's idea of a networked outreach project. Next week I
will be making a bus tour of native health and educational facilities on
reservations in north-central Wisconsin. One of the things we will discuss
is the development of educational resources, activities, and links for
native American students in these areas.

Several times, the idea of "distance" eduation has come up as a way to link
these communities with the educational community, which is often located at
some considerable distance from our campuses.

We seem to be moving toward a Mosaic/WWW foundation for these efforts, but
the real problem lies in setting up the connections in the "distant"
communities. With Gary's permission, I would like to carry his ideas to
those reservations next week and see how they are received. I return on
the 22 August, and would be willing to report then.

[ I am more than glad to authorize and encourage Dr. Petto to discuss
these ideas with the people he'll be visiting soon. In fact, I'm
really quite delighted to hear of his interest and his willingness
to do so. I wish him all the best in his travels, and will eagerly
look forward to hearing an account of his conversations upon his
return. --Gary ]
