Since early this morning (3 August), the NativeNet relay system "gnosys"
has been unable to receive electronic mail, due to an apparent problem
at its "net-neighbor" site (at Boston University). I have re-configured
the mail system to permit me to transmit via a backup site, which is how
I'm able to get out this article. I'm currently trying to contact someone
who can help me resolve the problem, but I expect that it may take the rest
of the day to get things working again, given the way these things usually
go. Meanwhile, I plan to take the opportunity to sort through the queues
of articles on file here that, for one reason or another, have not already
been transmitted, and will relay them to the appropriate mailing list,
which is not a bad idea anyway, I guess, and provides a good way for the
transition between myself and Jay Brummett, the new moderator, to take
place (I have not heard any more about Jay's condition, due to the same
problem I've just reported - I hope he is well on the road to recovery).
I'd like to ask that anyone having something to post to one of the lists
hold it until after this problem has been resolved. I don't think that
mail will be lost (it really depends on the cause of the problem at B.U.,
of course - present indications are that the machine there is running,
and I suspect it is accepting and queueing incoming mail). Please also
save any message you might have been thinking of sending asking whether
there's a problem. And I'm sure that you all wish me good luck in getting
things fixed soon, so you needn't bother sending such messages either. :-)
I'll let you all know just as soon as I'm able to receive mail again, and
that it's OK to submit articles to the mailing list addresses once more.
(Please note that there are two equivalent posting addresses for each list,
e.g. "native-l@gnosys.svle.ma.us" and "native-l@tamvm1.tamu.edu" - anything
sent to the second address is automatically forwarded to the first address
by the LISTSERV software at TAMVM1, so there's no point trying to get past
the problem by using the second posting address - everything depends upon
the link between the B.U. system and my own "gnosys" being restored.)
