| Subject: Call for contributors

Chiclera/os,

Gale Research Inc. has sent out a call for contributors to their Gale
Encyclopedia of Multicultural America (GEMA) project. Here's the scoop in
the Gale Research Inc. Associate Editor Judy Galens's words:
__________________

GEMA will contain original, signed essays on the 100 most populous ethnic
groups in the United States, as identified by the 1990 U.S. Census. Essays
on such ethno-religious groups as the Amish, Jews, and Chaldeans will also
be included in the project, as well as essays on selected indigenous groups.
I say "selected" because space limitations and the sheer volume of research
required for such a massive undertaking prevents the inclusion of all Native
American groups under the present configuration of the work.

In addition to depicting the cultural aspects of an ethnic group, e.g., family
life and traditional customs, each essay will cite population and immigration
statistics, and discuss pertinent issues, including language and acculturation.
Aimed toward high school students and general readers, the essays will be
written in a non-scholarly prose and will include photographs and illustrations.
The typical GEMA essay would be about 8,000 to 12,000 words, averaging about
twelve to sixteen typeset pages.

All manuscript is expected to be completed and delivered by October 28, 1994.
Upon acceptance of the manuscript, writers will be paid $600.00 per essay.

I would appreciate it if you could look over the enclosed materials on GEMA,
and make the information known to all who might be interested in writing for
the project...I will be out of the office August 4-22, during which time the
book will be handled by Robyn Young. She is the editor of the project until
it is offically handed off to me in late August. The number at Gale is
1-800-347-4253; Robyn's extension is 1428, and mine is 1205. The fax number
is (313) 961-6599; all faxes should be clearly marked with Robyn Young's name.
The mailing address here is Gale Research, 835 Penobscot Bldg., Detroit, MI
48226 (Attn: Robyn Young). Interested writers should send/fax a resume and
a writing sample...
